According to Airbus’ Global Market forecast, air traffic is expected to grow 4.7 percent annually until 2032. This, coupled with a projected increase of 20,000 new aircraft, means that we must prepare our skies today for the capacity demands of tomorrow. A key solution in improving airspace efficiency and increasing capacity is air traffic flow management. Air traffic flow management is the manner in which air navigation service providers (ANSPs), aircraft operators and airports can efficiently balance demand with the available capacity of aviation resources, including airports and airspaces.

Founded in our work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) where we designed and developed the Flight Schedule Monitor, Metron Aviation now tackles air traffic flow management (ATFM) challenges from gate-to-gate worldwide. Metron Aviation has worked with ANSPs from North America, South America, Africa, Australia, Asia and Europe to deliver solutions that improve air traffic flow throughout their regions, resulting in less fuel burn, fewer emissions, a reduction in airborne delays and lower operating costs.

Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) is a process, culture, and automation that engages stakeholders to deliver the right information to the right people at the right time to achieve efficient and equitable solutions. Through real-time decision making sessions, Metron Aviation guides all stakeholders—ANSPs, ATC, airlines, airports, etc.—to share data and decide on a course of action, while being engaged and committed to an end-game solution.

Metron Aviation has been at the forefront of the collaborative decision making movement since its inception in the early 1990s. Metron Aviation’s provides guidance through research, development, evaluation, testing, deployment, training, maintenance and operational support for deployed and prototyped CDM tools that ensure all stakeholders are able to optimize constrained resources. In the case of ATFM/CDM, stakeholders are able to make their own decisions about how to handle limited capacity situations. This allows them greater flexibility and predictability in aircraft, airspace and airport planning.
