Metron Aviation
houses a that combines dimensional modeling,
OLAP technologies, and data mining capabilities
to support Traffic Flow Management (TFM) analyses,
tool development, and simulations. The Warehouse
contains all the flight data in the FSA and POET
databases captured in a dimensional / star schema
model. A new FID Service provides consistent FIDs
between application databases and the data warehouse,
improving flight matching and overall data quality.
Expected to cover a long date range of flight data,
the warehouse has been designed to optimize query
performance, improve data quality, and run on real-time
or historical data inputs.

Aviation is experienced in searching through
large quantities
of data for engineering and economic gain. Leveraging
off this experience, Metron Aviation developed
Post Operations Evaluation Tool (POET), a system
which enables FAA and CDM airline participants
to analyze National Airspace System (NAS) performance.
POET was designed with a focus on supporting analysis
of collaborative routing problems, including identifying
areas of NAS congestion or inefficiency. Using
a variety of performance metrics, POET allows users
to explore how the NAS functions, including departure,
en route, arrival delays, and filed versus actually
flown flight tracks.
The POET data miner is rooted
by a set of functions, algorithms, and mining
filters providing the fundamental
operations for data mining. Utilizing advanced
data mining algorithms, the POET tool can automatically
identify associations and correlations between
generic database elements. Metron Aviation developed
POET for the FAA under the Collaborative Decision
Making (CDM) program. In addition, Metron Aviation
won a NASA Phase I SBIR in 2001 titled “Data
Mining Tool for Fleet Management,” in which
data mining capabilities similar to POET were proposed.
Based on the Functional Design Requirements, Metron
Aviation is capable of designing a software architecture
and data mining functions, algorithms, and filters
capable of providing proof-of-concept demonstrations
for various scenarios.

vast collection of data including ADL and unfiltered
ETMS data enable Metron Aviation to provide custom
reports to clients desiring statistical analysis
beyond simple queries. Technical, analytical and
programming expertise allows Metron Aviation to
develop complex algorithms and plug-in modules for
generating reports. Recent samplings include Departure
and Arrival Compliance Statistics, GDP Delivery
Summaries, Impact of Traffic Management Initiatives,
Delay Equity across Airlines, and Slot Credit Substitution
(SCS) Benefits. Enhanced architecture may provide
a vehicle for delivery via the web.
