Airspace Design Analysis

Designing and analyzing airspace operations for the future

Metron Aviation performs airspace design and research analysis on various aspects of airspace operations within en route and terminal airspace to identify inefficiencies in existing systems and develop solutions to improve capacity, safety and reduce operational costs. Examples of this research include:

  • Optimum Boundary Design for Air Route Control Centers (ARTCC) - The aim of this research is to optimally partition airspace into low and high altitude ARTCCs. A system level approach models traffic for the entire National Airspace System (NAS) to globally optimize the ARTCC boundaries.
  • Traffic Projection and NextGen Traffic Analysis - Realistic forecasts of air traffic demand are needed to perform airspace research. Metron Aviation has developed methods for traffic forecast in terms of volume, pattern and equipage level.
