Mitigating the environmental footprint of the aviation industry

Metron Aviation possesses a unique and comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of air transportation and is committed to helping the aviation industry address vital environmental and energy-related challenges that will improve the sustainability and harmonization of global aircraft operations. Metron Aviation provides a wide range of environmental services and is currently involved in several near- and long-term initiatives, including:

Decreasing Fuel Consumption through Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) — Metron Aviation has been associated with improvements in efficiency, related to better data sharing and tactical planning of Air Traffic Management (ATM) measures for more than a decade. These measures reduce delays and improve planning during delays by transitioning to engine-off states whenever possible and taking delays on the ground in order to save fuel.

Surface/Terminal Traffic Management — Metron Aviation has developed surface management systems that provide better situational awareness and improved planning of surface activities, by coordinating slots in different phases of the traffic management process. These system enhancements reduce fuel consumption and emissions by avoiding delays for aircraft in an engine-on state, minimizing surface queues and taxi times.

NextGen Air Transport — Metron Aviation conducts ongoing research into the long-term environmental impact of new developments in the air transportation industry worldwide. In the U.S., the focus is on the effects of anticipated operational improvements, such as the widespread adoption of arrival profiles using lower thrusts and less fuel, as well as the effects of alternative fuels and improved engine/airframe technology.
