Airport and Airspace Analysis

Accomplishing environmental compatibility goals through analysis and understanding

Airport and airspace analysis services address how changes in the operation of airspace elements and airports align with environmental goals and constraints. Highlights include:

  • Environmental Analysis for National Airspace Redesign Projects: For over ten years, Metron Aviation has participated in several metroplex projects, including New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Detroit and Cleveland.  The focus of these projects included large-scale analysis at multiple airports across broad regions, identifying causes of change in environmental impacts and development of mitigation options to reduce these impacts.
  • Environmental Analysis for Airport Projects: Metron Aviation assesses environmental impacts associated with several airports.  Through an assessment of noise mitigation alternatives for the Denver area, Metron Aviation developed optimization techniques used to search through a large number of alternatives. The environmental analysis of potential impacts, for the relocation and development of a new St. George, Utah airport, encompassed modeling and analysis efforts, as key components of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).  The modeling and analysis work entailed a much broader analysis framework than a typical airport establishment project, due to the sensitive nature of the region, proximity to numerous national park sites and the controversy associated with the potential for increased overflights of these park resources.
  • Benefits Assessment of Noise-Aware Decision Support Tools (RTO61): Metron Aviation performed an innovative analysis for NASA to estimate the benefits associated with noise-aware, decision support tools.  This analysis demonstrates Metron Aviation’s ability to evaluate alternative scenarios at both detailed and macroscopic levels, to redesign key elements of traffic behavior (routing, altitudes, schedules, etc.) to mitigate environmental impacts and to estimate the changes in environmental impact that constitute the benefits of such environmentally-aware, decision support tools.

Noise aware decision support tools aid in redesign efforts.
