Airspace Sectorization Tool
Modeling and optimization airspace capacity
The Airspace Sectorization Tool (SOT) is a modeling and optimization tool for algorithmically separating airspace into optimal segments. SOT inputs regularly updated projections of demand and weather forecasts, then produces optimum airspace boundaries. These boundaries balance airspace complexity and minimize controller workload under various global and regional constraints, for time horizons as short as four hours. The criteria can be defined separately for various levels of automation in Air Traffic Control (ATC) procedures and can be adjusted based on available level of automation.
SOT enables a more efficient utilization of airspace capacity and reduces the operational cost for Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP) by dynamically re-aligning the airspace boundaries to comply with the monthly, daily and hourly alterations in user aggregated demand, route structures and weather pattern changes. By providing airspace capacity where it is most needed, airborne delays can be reduced and users can fly closer to their preferred trajectories.
