Metron Aviation continues to shape the future of air transportation through a series of cutting‑edge research and development initiatives sponsored by NASA. These projects—focused on Advanced Air Mobility, real‑time turbulence intelligence, and Explainable Artificial Intelligence—underscore Metron Aviation’s commitment to safer, smarter, and more efficient air traffic operations across all domains of the National Airspace System (NAS).
Accelerating Advanced Air Mobility Through NASA’s AAMP Initiative

Metron Aviation, in collaboration with METIS Solutions, is proud to support NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility Pathfinders (AAMP) initiative, which is providing valuable insight into how to safely integrate emerging electric air taxi technologies into the National Airspace System. Metron and its partners, AAMTEX and Unmanned Experts (UMEX), continue to build on proven technologies from cutting-edge projects such as NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility Pathfinders (AAMP), and the FAA’s Key Site Operational Assessment program.
The technologies—including Demand-Capacity Balancing (DCB), Operational Intent Management (OIM), Conformance Monitoring (CM), and advanced air vehicle simulation capabilities—will be connected to NASA’s AAMP simulation environment to test strategic conflict management, interoperability practices and procedures, and emerging ASTM data exchange standards. Key objectives include validating DCB and OIM functions to inform industry standards, enabling interoperability for data sharing among fleet operators, and optimizing safe operations through collaborative practices.
Metron Aviation is leveraging this research to expand its role from being a global leader in ATM solutions for traditional airspace, into a powerhouse in the low-altitude, Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and AAM airspace environments.
Delivering Real‑Time Turbulence Intelligence for Safer Flight Operations
Atmospheric turbulence is a major hazard to all classes of aircraft, with risks ranging from passenger discomfort to aircraft damage, to serious injury. In this NASA-funded R&D effort, Metron Aviation and The Innovation Laboratory, Inc. (TIL) develop a Turbulence-Impact Collaborative Response System to provide real-time information about turbulence to guide airspace users’ decisions on changing flight levels. Airspace users work to avoid areas of turbulence and, in turn, seek to identify hazardous regions and route (or climb/descend) aircraft around turbulence constraints.
This R&D effort fuses in situ and real-time observational turbulence data and turbulence nowcasts, such as the Graphical Turbulence Guidance-(GTG) and Graphical Turbulence Guidance Nowcast (GTGN), to identify where turbulence is and where it is not. Using this type of system, ATM planning and routing can be accomplished collaboratively to minimize turbulence hazard encounters.
Beyond the Black Box: Building Trustworthy Decision Support with Explainable AI
Air Traffic Management (ATM) is seeing an increasing number of applications of AI, but AI-enabled systems often resemble black boxes that mysteriously convert incoming data into predicted outcomes, classifications, and recommended decisions. In this NASA-funded R&D effort, Metron Aviation and The Innovation Laboratory, Inc. (TIL) develop Explainable AI (XAI) applications that can be understood and trusted by human decision makers.
This intelligent system will be mounted on Metron Aviation’s existing data analytics platform to provide customers with critical insights on pilot intentions, aircraft operational modes and transitions, deviations from filed flight plans, irregular operations, and the detection of anomalous activities. This system will transform raw flight data into operational insights, allowing users to correct inefficiencies, recognize opportunities, and improve short-term and long-term operational performance.
Driving the Future of Air Traffic Innovation
Together, these NASA‑funded initiatives reflect Metron Aviation’s expanded vision for airspace management—one that encompasses traditional aviation, emerging mobility technologies, and the infusion of advanced analytics and AI.
From enabling electric air taxi operations to boosting turbulence resilience and building trustworthy intelligent systems, Metron Aviation remains at the forefront of modernizing air traffic operations for the next generation of global aviation.
